GLOW pumpkins - from guest blogger Katherine Knapik

Hi everyone! My name is Katherine Knapik. I’m a professional illustrator, long time watercolorist, and lover of things that shimmer! It’s spooky season, and this week we’re tackling some basic glowing effects with this fabulous jack-o-lantern.

Since our little pumpkin guy is lit from inside, I’ll be using two fantastic orange pigments from The Smiling Hippo: I Love Pumpkins, and Pumpkin Spice- GLOW in the dark.

I start by using I Love Pumpkins all over the inside of our jack-o-lantern’s eyes and mouth, and I also put some down on the ground in front of him, since the light coming out of his face would illuminate the surfaces around him. The glitter in this paint is so lovely and adds the perfect shimmer for that illusion of a glow, and the orange pigment in the paint could not be a better match for this pumpkin.

I also add in some super fun glow in the dark watercolor in the shade Pumpkin Spice just to the innermost parts of his eyes and mouth. This way, we will not only have gorgeous glitter during the daylight, but a happy smiling face in the dark too!

And here’s the finished Illustration! I’ll see you all in the next one!
